Chelsea vs Manchester United: FA Cup history over the years

The Premier League heavyweights complete the FA Cup fifth round this evening with the Blues hosting Manchester United in the most mouthwatering of the FA Cup fifth round ties tonight as both strive to add to their glittering records in the historic competition. The duo has won the FA Cup 20 times between them (United 12 and Chelsea 8) with only Arsenal (13) have claimed glory on more occasions. They have faced each other in both the previous two seasons with Maurizio Sarri's side edging the Red Devils in both ties 1-0 including last term’s final. Chelsea have had the better of their clashes in recent years and United will be eager to return to winning ways against the west Londoners at Stamford Bridge this evening.

Here is a look at their head-to-head ties in recent memory.

10. Man United 4 Chelsea 0 – FA Cup final, May 1994

Sir Alex Ferguson won his second FA Cup trophy by smashing Chelsea at Wembley. Eric Cantona netted two penalties before Mark Hughes and Brian McClair completed the rout.

9. Man United 2 Chelsea 1 – FA Cup semi-final, March 1996

Andy Cole and David Beckham secured United’s semi-final win despite Ruud Gullit scoring for Chelsea. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side then beat Liverpool in the final thanks to Eric Cantona’s late winner.

8. Chelsea 3 Man United 5 – FA Cup third round, January 1998

United claimed glory in a thrilling yet strange early round game in the 1997/98 campaign. Doubles from David Beckham and Andy Cole and a fifth from Teddy Sheringham put the Red Devils in complete control in west London. But Graeme Le Saux and a brace from Gianluca Vialli gave the Blues hope that they could force an unlikely replay.

7. Chelsea 0 Man United 2 – FA Cup quarter-final replay, March 1999

Dwight York netted in either half to dump Chelsea out. United would go on to beat Newcastle 2-0 in the final thanks to goals from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes.

6. Man United 0 Chelsea 0 – FA Cup quarter-final, March 1999

Nothing could separate the two sides at Old Trafford.

5. Chelsea 1 Man United 0 – FA Cup final, May 2007

Chelsea won the trophy thanks to Didier Drogba who scored an extra-time winner in the first FA Cup final to be played at the new Wembley Stadium. Chelsea also won the League Cup that season while United claimed Premier League glory as the two sides dominated domestically.

4. Man United 2 Chelsea 2 – FA Cup quarter-final, March 2013

Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney put United in control after just 11 minutes but Chelsea came back in the second half and forced a replay thanks to Eden Hazard and Ramires.

3. Chelsea 1 Man United 0 – FA Cup quarter-final replay, April 2013

Demba Ba bagged the winner just after half-time but Chelsea lost in the semi-finals to Manchester City.

2. Chelsea 1 Man United 0 – FA Cup quarter-final, March 2017

N’Golo Kante fired home a low drive at Stamford Bridge following Ander Herrera’s red card for United. Then managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte also clashed on the touchline. The Blues went on to lose 2-1 to Arsenal in that season’s final.

Eden Hazard scored an early penalty in last season’s final to secure Chelsea’s eighth FA Cup trophy.
