The biggest upsets in football this European season
The football season across various leagues has been suspended currently due to the coronavirus pandemic. It does not look like that the football season will begin again anytime soon.
Here’s a flashback of few biggest upsets this European season.
Watford beat Liverpool 3-0 in PL
Liverpool were coming off a 44-match unbeaten run in the Premier League. They came off a fighting 3-2 win over West Ham United in the previous PL clash.
But they were left dumbfounded in the clash against Watford as they succumbed to a shocking 3-0 loss. Watford breached Liverpool defence time and again during the clash.
Liverpool forward line had an off day in the clash as Watford rejoiced one of the greatest upsets in the Premier League.
Atletico Madrid beat Liverpool in both legs in Champions League last 16
Atletico were having a poor run of form before they took on defending champions Liverpool in the Champions League in the last 16.
In the first leg at home, Atletico sneaked a 1-0 win over Liverpool via a Saul Niguez’s 4th-minute winner. In the second leg, Liverpool came out strong in the first 90 mins, with the aggregate score being 1-1.
But then Atletico just blew Liverpool away with 3 goals in extra time. Atletico advanced into last 8 with 4-2 aggregate win. Atletico boss Diego Simeone running with his arms spread wide was the highlight of the match.
Arsenal crash out of Europa League
Arsenal were the last season’s Europa League finalists, but they crashed out of this year’s competition from the round of 32 itself. Arsenal had defeated Olympiacos 1-0 away in the first leg.
In the second leg at home, Arsenal conceded a goal in regulation time as the game went into extra time. In extra time, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored to put Arsenal ahead.
The Gunners looked on course to next round, but El Arabi scored a late goal to stun Arsenal and put Olympiacos into round of 16 on away goals after an aggregate score of 2-2.
Barcelona and Real Madrid knocked out of Copa Del Rey
The Spanish giants were favourites to meet in the final, but both the clubs suffered shocking loss in the semi-finals. Barcelona looked poised to take the match to extra time against Athletic Bilbao, with both teams unable to break the deadlock.
But a 93rd-minute winner from Inaki Williams spoiled Barca’s party. Real Madrid lost a dramatic 4-3 thriller to Real Sociedad in the semi-finals.Both these upsets also came on the same day.
