How Many Matches Has Novak Djokovic Won at Each Grand Slam?
Novak Djokovic continues to break records and fortify his status as one of the greatest tennis players in the history of tennis. Presently, he became the first player ever to win at least 90 match wins at each of the four Grand Slam tournaments. This victory underscores his consistency and influence across all major surfaces, making him a formidable opponent in any setting.
Djokovic's Grand Slam Wins: A Breakdown
As of now, Djokovic's record stands as follows:
- Australian Open: 94 wins
- French Open: 96 wins
- Wimbledon: 97 wins
- US Open: 90 wins
This achievement is notable not just because of the sheer number of wins but because it reflects his ability to accommodate and excel on different surfaces—hard courts in Melbourne and New York, clay in Paris, and grass in London. Djokovic’s flexibility and resilience have been key to his success across these tournaments.
The Road to 90+ Wins
Each Grand Slam tournament shows its own unique challenges, and Djokovic’s journey to over 90 wins in each has been nothing short of exceptional.
- Australian Open: Known as the “King of Melbourne,” Djokovic has always performed distinctively well at the Australian Open. His 94 victories here have come with a record 10 titles, more than any other male player in history.
- French Open: Winning at Roland Garros has often been regarded one of the toughest challenges in tennis, essentially because of the clay surface that slows down the game. In spite of the dominance of Rafael Nadal on clay, Djokovic has managed to win the French Open three times, acquiring 96 match wins in the process.
- Wimbledon: On the grass courts of Wimbledon, Djokovic has unfailingly represented his skill and mental toughness. His 97 wins, accompanied by 7 titles, are a testament to his ability to master the refinements of playing on grass.
- US Open: The hard courts of Flushing Meadows have also been a successful ground for Djokovic. Even though the competition is always fierce in New York, he has managed to notch 90 wins and is in endeavour of his 4th US Open title.
A Recent Battle in the US Open
Djokovic’s journey at the 2024 US Open has already seen some intense moments. In a very recent match, he faced Laslo Djere, a fellow Serbian player, in an exhausting contest. Djokovic took the first set after an enthralling battle that lasted for nearly over an hour. The hot and humid conditions in New York took their toll on both players, with Djokovic needing treatment right before the second set.
Djere, sensing an opportunity, broke Djokovic’s serve twice in the second set to take a 4-2 lead. Nevertheless, he began to struggle physically, eventually calling for a medical timeout. After the break, Djere couldn’t win another game and had to retire at the start of the third set, giving Djokovic the victory.
After the match, Djokovic affirmed the difficulty of the encounter, saying, “Overall, it was a big fight. Over two hours for two sets. I served awful. So playing without the serve, you have to grind, you have to run. So I guess I had to rely on my baseline game.” He added, “The matches are only going to get tougher from here. I know that, but I’m fine. I’ll find my way, as I have done many times in my career.”
The Quest for Grand Slam History
As Djokovic progresses through the US Open, he is not just looking to add another trophy to his collection; he is chasing history. Along with 24 Grand Slam singles titles already to his name, he is tied with Margaret Court for the most in the history of tennis. Achieving a 25th title would put him in uncharted territory, making him the player with the most Grand Slam victories ever.
Djokovic’s ability to thrive under pressure, adapt to different conditions, and maintain a high level of play throughout his entire career has brought him to this point. Whether he achieves his goal at this year’s US Open or another Grand Slam in the future, one thing remains certain: Novak Djokovic’s place in the history of tennis is already safeguarded, and his legacy continues to grow with each match he wins.
As the US Open advances, all eyes will be on Djokovic as he continues his quest of tennis greatness, adding more victories to his already incredible tally at each Grand Slam.
