La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona make the headlines again

La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona exited Copa Del Rey on the same date for the first time since 1955 following shocking defeats.

The giants were stunned by the Basque pair, Real Sociedad and Athletic Club respectively.

Madrid were upstaged 4-3 by a visiting Sociedad squad at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Lionel Messi’s runners-up for six consecutive seasons Barcelona conceded a 93rd-minute goal in a 1-0 loss away to Atheltic.

It was Inaki Williams, who scored the winning goal and became the reason for Barcelona’s frustration.

The Madrid game was comparatively an entertaining one with the loanee, Martin Odegaard, who struck in the 22nd minute against his parent club to put Sociedad ahead.

Madrid tried a lot but their hopes almost vanished after conceding again, twice in the span of two minutes in the 54th and 56th minute respectively and everyone thought the game was dead.

Alexander Isak scored both the goals. However, Marcelo responded just after three minutes and the game was alive.

The 69th minute saw a goal again in favor of Real Sociedad. Rodrygo Goes pulled one back in the 81st minute, while Nacho Fernandez scored in the stoppage time.

Sociedad were nervous but fought their way through and made history. 65 years ago, when Madrid and Barcelona were knocked out at the same time, Sevilla and Atheltic were the better teams on the day and it was the semi-finals of the Copa Del Rey.

This time it was the quarter-finals that witnessed the upsets. Both the teams will now be focusing on the UCL and the league.

Madrid, three points clear atop La Liga will take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League while Barcelona take on Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli.

Quique Setien has been trying to find the best combination after some disappointing performances and will hope that he gets one against the Serie A side.
