Top 10 teams with most wins in T20 World Cup history
Winning on the biggest stage of cricket’s most explosive format takes more than just talent — it demands composure, confidence, and a strong mindset. The T20 World Cup is unpredictable by nature, which is exactly what makes it so exciting. Over the years, even the strongest and most experienced teams have stumbled against lower-ranked opponents.
In a tournament like this, consistency is everything. One off day can cost you a match, and a couple of poor performances can end your campaign. Teams that manage to stay focused, adapt quickly, and perform under pressure are the ones that go the distance.
Let’s take a look at the top 10 teams with the most match wins in ICC Men's T20 World Cup history.
10. Bangladesh – 12 wins

Bangladesh currently sit at the bottom of the standings, with 12 wins in the tournament’s history. They have never reached a semi-final, and despite competing regularly, they haven’t quite managed to turn their potential into consistent success.
Their best finish came in 2024, when they placed seventh — a result that highlights the challenges they’ve faced in making a deeper impact in the competition.
Ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Bangladesh decided not to travel to India for the tournament. As a result, the International Cricket Council (ICC) replaced them with Scotland just days before the competition began.
9. Afghanistan – 14 wins

Afghanistan now have 14 wins in the tournament after their campaign in the 2026 edition, where they were knocked out in the first round. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation as true giant-killers, powered by their world-class spin trio — Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Since becoming a Full Member nation in 2017, Afghanistan has continued to rise steadily on the global stage. Their biggest breakthrough came in 2024, when they reached the semi-finals in a historic run that included a memorable victory over Australia.
8. New Zealand – 28 wins

New Zealand have never managed to lift the trophy in this tournament, even though they’ve consistently been among the strongest sides. They’ve reached three semi-finals and one final, showing just how competitive and dependable they are on the big stage.
Over the years, the Kiwis have built a reputation as a steady, well-balanced team, with a reliable batting unit and a formidable bowling attack. In their prime, the pace duo of Trent Boult and Tim Southee led the charge, troubling even the best batting lineups in the world.
Their finest moment in the tournament came in the 2021 edition, where they made it all the way to the final. However, despite a strong campaign, they fell just short and had to settle for a runners-up finish.
7. West Indies – 28 wins

The West Indies are one of only three teams to have won the ICC T20 World Cup twice — a testament to just how dangerous they can be in this format. When they’re on song, the Caribbean side has the firepower to beat anyone in the world.
But their T20 World Cup journey has been far from steady. Alongside their two title wins, they’ve reached the semi-finals twice, yet they’ve also suffered early exits in the group stage on two occasions. It perfectly captures the West Indies story in T20 cricket — brilliant at their best, but unpredictable from tournament to tournament.
6. England – 32 wins

England won their first-ever T20 World Cup title in 2010, led by captain Paul Collingwood. Since 2016, they’ve been one of the most dominant sides in the tournament.
They endured a dramatic and heart-breaking defeat to the West Indies cricket team in the 2016 final, but bounced back in style—lifting the trophy again in 2022 under Jos Buttler. Along the way, they also made it to the semi-finals in 2021 and 2024, underlining their consistency as one of the competition’s strongest teams.
5. Australia – 32 wins

Australia’s record in the T20 World Cup has been surprisingly inconsistent for a team of their stature. Under Ricky Ponting, they made it to the semi-finals in the inaugural 2007 tournament, but followed that up with an early group-stage exit in the next edition.
They came close to glory in 2010, finishing as runners-up, but it wasn’t until 2021 that Australia finally had their breakthrough moment. Led by Aaron Finch, they produced a dominant performance in the final against New Zealand to lift their first-ever T20 World Cup title.
However, despite that historic triumph, Australia have struggled to maintain the same momentum and have failed to reach the semi-finals in every edition since their 2021 victory.
4. Pakistan – 33 wins

Pakistan has always brought drama, unpredictability, and pure entertainment to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Known for their fiery, venomous bowling attacks, Pakistan were right in the thick of the action during the tournament’s early years. They suffered heartbreak in a thrilling final against arch-rivals India national cricket team, but bounced back in style by lifting the trophy in 2009.
Their consistency continued with back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2010 and 2012, and they once again made it to the final in 2022, proving their knack for rising on the big stage.
However, 2024 marked a rare low point. Pakistan endured their worst T20 World Cup campaign, crashing out in the group stage after shock defeats to India and the United States national cricket team — a disappointing chapter in an otherwise dramatic World Cup journey.
3. Sri Lanka – 35 wins

Sri Lanka sit third on the list, boasting one of the most consistent records in ICC Men's T20 World Cup history. Their golden moment came in 2014 when they defeated India to lift their first T20 World Cup trophy.
Before finally getting their hands on the title, Sri Lanka had endured heartbreak twice, finishing as runners-up on two occasions, and they also made it to the semifinals in 2010. However, since their 2014 triumph, the Lankans have struggled to rediscover that same consistency and have not managed to break into the final four again.
2. South Africa – 36 wins

South Africa have more wins than any other team in the tournament’s history without ever lifting the trophy. Despite regularly fielding strong, well-balanced squads, the Proteas have repeatedly fallen just short when it matters most.
Their best chance came in 2024, when they were in a winning position against India but suffered a dramatic collapse. Over the years, they’ve also made it to two semi-finals and, notably, have never been knocked out in the group stage — yet the title continues to elude them.
1. India – 39 wins
India made history by winning the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 and claimed their second title in 2024, bringing their total wins from these two tournaments to 11. They also reached the final in 2014 but were defeated by Sri Lanka in Dhaka.
Having participated in every edition of the T20 World Cup, India has been the most successful team overall in terms of total victories.
