Annually, players from various countries across the globe participate, and throughout its history, this youngest of the Grand Slams has witnessed champions hailing from different nations.

Australia had 44 Australian Open titles in the amateur era but has managed only six yet in the Open Era. The first Australian to win in the Open Era was the iconic Rod Laver, who triumphed over Spain's Andres Gimeno in the final match. Notably, Australia experienced a period of dominance with three consecutive titles from 1971 to 1973, during which Ken Rosewall claimed victory twice in succession, followed by John Newcombe, who won the title in 1973.

Newcombe won again in 1975. The last Australian to win the Open in men’s singles event was Mark Edmondson who won it in 1976.

He continued his winning streak by capturing the title again the following year.

In 1985, it was Stefan Edberg, another Swedish player, who defeated Mats Wilander in the final match. Edberg also secured victory in 1987 and went on to claim his third Australian Open title in 1988. The only other Swedish player to achieve the Australian Open title is Thomas Johansson, who won it back in 2002.

Andre Agassi’s four title wins make him the player with the most Australian Open title wins for the United States of America. He is also the last American to win the Australian grand slam. Agassi's success in 2003 marked the last time an American triumphed at the Australian Grand Slam.
