6 Indian cricketers from ICC Champions Trophy 2017 squad who are retired from international cricket
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to return in February of this year, following an eight-year hiatus. The last tournament was held in 2017 in England.
India is positioned in Group A of the tournament, competing alongside its long-standing rivals Pakistan, as well as New Zealand and Bangladesh.
India’s last Champions Trophy campaign in 2017 was a mix of highs and lows. The team won four matches in a row to reach the final but was completely outplayed by Pakistan in the final, suffering a 180-run defeat. The loss marked the last Champions Trophy appearance for several Indian players.
In this article, let’s look at the Indian players from the 2017 Champions Trophy squad who are now retired from international cricket.
1. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan ranked as the third-highest run-scorer for India during the 2017 Champions Trophy with 338 runs across five innings, which resulted in an impressive average of 67.6 and a strike rate of 101.80. Together with Rohit Sharma, he established strong opening partnerships that significantly contributed to India's commanding performance leading up to the final.
Dhawan declared his retirement from international cricket on August 24, 2024, following his final ODI match against Bangladesh in 2022.
2. MS Dhoni

Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter and former captain MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020. His final appearance for India occurred during the semi-final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup against New Zealand, where a runout ended India's aspirations of advancing to the final.
In the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Dhoni scored a total of 63 runs across two innings, achieving a strike rate of 98.52.
3. Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik was part of India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, but he didn’t play a single game as all-rounders Kedar Jadhav and Yuvraj Singh were preferred in the playing XI.
Karthik was a regular member of India’s title-winning team at the 2013 Champions Trophy. He declared his retirement on June 1, 2024. His final international match for India took place against Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
4. Yuvraj Singh

Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh officially retired from international cricket on June 10, 2019. His final match representing India took place against the West Indies in 2017 at North Sound.
Yuvraj played as a middle-order batter during the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Over the course of five innings, he accumulated a total of 105 runs, achieving an average of 35 and a strike rate of 99. His top score in the tournament was 53, which he recorded in a group stage match against Pakistan.
5. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin served as India's secondary spinner, following Ravindra Jadeja, during the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017. The off-spinner from Tamil Nadu faced significant challenges throughout the tournament, securing only one wicket across three matches, resulting in an average of 167. Subsequently, he was excluded from the white-ball teams; however, he successfully made a return a few years later.
Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2024, after the final test match between India and Australia held in Brisbane.
6. Kedar Jadhav

Kedar Jadhav concluded his short yet thrilling international career on June 3, 2024. He began his journey in 2014 and participated in his final One Day International match on February 8, 2020, facing New Zealand in Auckland.
Jadhav batted only twice in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, scoring 26 runs at an average of 26. He also contributed with the ball, taking three wickets during the tournament.
