All managers sacked during Premier League 2024-25 season
Julen Lopetegui was among the latest managers in the Premier League to be dismissed in January. His time at West Ham United came to an unexpected conclusion as a result of the team's poor performance in the league, which positioned them in the lower half of the standings.
Numerous head coaches have been dismissed, indicating that he is not the sole Premier League manager to have been relieved of his duties since the commencement of the new season.
In this article, let’s examine each manager who has been let go since the season began.
Leicester City: Steve Cooper
Leicester City terminated the contract of Steve Cooper after just five months in charge. During his tenure, the team secured only two victories out of 12 matches in the Premier League. Prior to this, the Welsh manager successfully guided Nottingham Forest back to the top tier of English football in 2022, marking their return after a 23-year absence, and managed to maintain their position in the league the subsequent season.
Wolves: Gary O’Neil
While Gary O’Neil's first season as the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers was undoubtedly a success, his subsequent season has taken a turn for the worse. Since the team is one of the Premier League’s biggest underdogs, his final games were tainted by players losing their composure. As a result, he was forced to remove Mario Lemina from his position as Wolves captain.
The decisive factor that concluded his tenure, which spanned nearly 500 days, was a defeat against relegation competitors Ipswich. Since his arrival from Saudi Arabia, Vitor Pereira has achieved a commendable series of results; however, the Old Gold still seems likely to face relegation.
Southampton: Russel Martin
Southampton's management, frustrated by the team's disappointing performance, made an important decision to terminate Russell Martin's contract. In his final match, Tottenham Hotspur delivered a harsh 5-0 defeat to his squad, reviving painful memories of their previous 9-0 loss.
Following the Saints' playoff triumph in May, Martin continued to adhere to his principles. Nevertheless, his failure to secure points at the top tier ultimately compelled the board to dismiss him from his position, as the team currently occupies the 20th spot in the standings with only six points.
Everton: Sean Dyche
Everton confirmed on Thursday the dismissal of Sean Dyche from his position as manager. Despite successfully guiding the club away from relegation in successive seasons amid financial challenges, Dyche, who took over from Frank Lampard in 2023, has witnessed the Merseyside team face difficulties attributed to a combination of poor performance and a lackluster style of play.
Everton currently holds the 16th position in the Premier League, having scored a total of 15 goals across 19 matches. In contrast, Southampton, occupying the last place, has recorded an even lower goal tally.
West Ham United: Julen Lopetegui
Lopetegui, a Spanish national, was dismissed from his position as manager on Wednesday, following a tenure of merely six months. The 58-year-old, who previously managed Wolves, was appointed in May after the departure of David Moyes, although he officially assumed the managerial role on July 1. During his time in charge, the Hammers secured only six victories in the Premier League.
The team suffered a defeat of 4-1 against Manchester City on Saturday, marking their ninth loss in 20 league matches this season. This result has positioned them in 14th place, with a seven-point cushion above the relegation zone.
Manchester Untied: Erik ten Hag
Following a dismal beginning to the season, Erik ten Hag was dismissed by Manchester United in what became the most widely reported termination. With only three wins from their initial nine matches, the Red Devils found themselves in 14th position in the Premier League after the Dutchman's last match, which ended in a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United.
Ten Hag has been labeled the least effective manager in the history of Manchester United, even though he guided the team to two trophies during his two-and-a-half-year tenure at Old Trafford. Following his departure, Ruben Amorim has assumed the managerial role.
