The 125th edition of Roland Garros got off to a flying start yesterday with some big upsets, narrow defeats, and terrific thrillers. Here are some interesting numbers at the end of Day 1.

It was a star-studded Day 1 at the French Open 2021 with a couple of shocking results as 20 seeds played their opening matches. 

4 out of 11 men’s seeds crashed out. The casualties were Dominic Thiem, Grigor Dimitrov, Hubert Hurkacz, and Dan Evans. Angelique Kerber also suffered an upset on the women’s side.

A total of 122 sets were played on the first day at Roland Garros 2021. Men played 75 sets of gruelling tennis and women were involved in 47 sets. There were a total of 4 five-setters on the men's side and 6 three-setters on the women's draw.

Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine stunned the 26th seed, Angelique Kerber, 6-2 6-4 in the first round. The World number 139 entered the main draw after not dropping a set in 3 rounds of qualifying. 

The former World number 1, Kerber suffered her third first-round loss in a row in Paris. The 24-year-old Kalinina making her tournament debut will face 50th-ranked Danielle Collins in the second round.

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #68 
Pablo Andujar, ranked 68th on the ATP Tour pulled off a 5-set victory against the 4th seed Dominic Thiem in the first round. 

Trailing by a two-set deficit, Andujar played aggressively and took the next 3 sets 6-3 6-4 6-4. It was the first victory for the Spaniard against a top-5 player after he turned pro in 2003. 

Thiem lost his first-round match at the French Open for the first time since his debut in 2014. 

Result: Pablo Andujar edges Dominic Thiem 4-6 5-7 6-3 6-4 6-4 in 4 hours and 28 minutes.

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #58
Elena Vesnina routed Belarusian Olga Govortsova 6-1 6-0 in just 58 minutes in the first round. Notably, it was the first singles victory for Vesnina since she became a mother in 2018. The Russian, a 4-time grand slam doubles champion takes on the 11th seed Petra Kvitova in the second round.

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #25 
Kei Nishikori won his 25th five-setter with a 4-hour 3-minute victory against Alessandro Giannessi in the opening round. 

Nishikori has the best winning percentage (78.12%) on the ATP Tour when matches go to the 5th set. The former World number 4 locks horns against the 23rd seed Karen Khachanov in the second round.

Result: Kei Nishikori outlasts Alessandro Giannessi 6-4 6-7(4) 6-3 4-6 6-4 in 243 minutes.  

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #5 
Grigor Dimitrov retired hurt in a match for the fifth time in his career. The Bulgarian was leading 6-2 6-4 5-1 against Marcos Giron in the first round. 

He suffered a back injury and Giron took 9 games in a row (third set 7-5 and a 4th set lead of 3-0). It was the first mid-match retirement for the 16th seed Dimitrov since 2012. The 82nd-ranked Giron faces the 59th-ranked Guido Pella in the round of 64.

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #61 
Two-time French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem committed a whopping 61 unforced errors against Andujar. 

The Austrian fired 66 winners but his inconsistent one-handed backhand and a poor second-serve winning percentage of 34 proved to be the difference. “I still hope that I can bounce back stronger than before”, said Thiem to the press after his tough five-set loss in the first round.

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #4 
25th seed Dan Evans lost in the first round at Roland Garros for the 4th time in a row. The Brit began strongly taking a 6-1 lead against Miomir Kecmanovic. 

The Serbian bounced back brilliantly winning the next 3 sets 6-3 6-3 6-4. Evans committed 45 unforced errors and managed to take only 53% of points on his first serve.

Interestingly, Svetlana Kuznetsova shares this dubious distinction with Evans. The Russian has also lost 4 first-round matches in a row at the French Open. 15th seed Victoria Azarenka defeated her 6-4 2-6 6-3 in 2 hours. The 2009 Roland Garros champion Kuznetsova has a lot to work on her game on the red dirt.

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #150 
Pablo Andujar won his landmark 150th match on the ATP Tour with a fantastic five-set victory against Dominic Thiem in the opening round. The 35-year-old will face 52nd-ranked Federico Delbonis or 88th-ranked Radu Albot in the second round.  

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #7 
Alexander Zverev bagged his 7th five-set win at the French Open with a first-round victory against compatriot Oscar. 

The 6th seed lost the first two sets 6-3 6-3 as he struggled against Oscar’s clever drop shots. However, the Next-Gen star breathed fire in the next 3 sets with a dominating scoreline of 6-2 6-2 6-0 as Otte’s dramatically dipped.  

It was Sascha’s 7th five-setter victory in Paris where he has won just 14 matches. Expect the marathon man to continue this trend!. Zverev takes on the Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin in the round of 64.

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #12 
A total of 12 qualifiers (8 men and 4 women) featured in their matches on Day 1.  Men had mixed fortunes with 3 wins and 5 losses while Kalinia was the sole winner in the women's side. Looks like they still have to uplift their game to stay competitive at the highest level.  

French Open 2021 Day 1 Results & Unique Stat #59 
Leylah Annie Fernandez blitzed past Anastasia Potapova in the opening round, drubbing her 6-2 6-1 in 59 minutes. The 18-year old clinched 77% of her first serve points and won all 12 points at the net. The Canadian will face 23rd seed Madison Keys in the second round.
