Known for its fast pace, big hits, and thrilling finishes, the tournament showcases some of the finest talents in cricket and creates unforgettable moments for fans. Over the nine editions played so far, six different teams have won the T20 World Cup, highlighting how competitive the format is.
In this article, let’s take a look at the list of T20 World Cup winners from the first edition in 2007 to the most recent tournament in 2026.
1. 2007 T20 World Cup – India

After India’s shocking group-stage exit from the 2007 ODI World Cup, several senior players chose not to take part in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa. A young Indian team, led by MS Dhoni, was given the responsibility instead. What followed became one of the most memorable moments in Indian cricket history.
Dhoni guided the inexperienced squad brilliantly as India defeated strong teams like Australia, England, and South Africa on their way to the final. In a thrilling final against Pakistan, India held their nerve to lift the first-ever T20 World Cup trophy.
The tournament also introduced a new generation of Indian stars. Players like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, RP Singh, and Irfan Pathan played crucial roles throughout the campaign and became heroes of the historic victory.
2. 2009 T20 World Cup – Pakistan

Pakistan were unlucky to lose the 2007 T20 World Cup final, when Misbah-ul-Haq’s attempted scoop shot led to a dramatic finish. However, they made up for that disappointment two years later. In 2009, under the captaincy of Younis Khan, Pakistan completed their unfinished business and lifted the ICC T20 World Cup in England.
Despite losing to England and Sri Lanka in the Super 8 stage, Pakistan managed to reach the final. In the final match, they faced Sri Lanka again and produced a strong performance to win the trophy. Shahid Afridi played a crucial role throughout the tournament, while Umar Gul was outstanding with the ball, making them two of Pakistan’s best performers in the competition.
3. 2010 T20 World Cup – England

England won their first-ever World Cup in 2010 when Paul Collingwood led the team to victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup held in the West Indies.
The tournament didn’t start well for England, as they suffered a defeat against the hosts early on. However, the team quickly bounced back and adopted a fearless, attacking approach. From that point forward, England went on an impressive run and didn’t lose another match in the competition.
In the final, England defeated Australia to lift their first T20 World Cup trophy. Players like Kevin Pietersen, Craig Kieswetter, and Graeme Swann played crucial roles throughout the tournament and were key to England’s historic triumph.
4. 2012 T20 World Cup – West Indies

The 2012 ICC World T20 in Sri Lanka started on a disappointing note for the West Indies, as they lost their opening match to Australia. However, the team quickly regrouped and began playing with confidence and unity, turning their campaign around as the tournament progressed.
West Indies eventually reached the final, where they faced the hosts, Sri Lanka, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Delivering a strong performance, West Indies secured the victory and lifted the trophy.
Under the leadership of Darren Sammy, West Indies claimed an ICC title, making him one of the few captains from the Caribbean to achieve that honor. A standout performer throughout the tournament—and especially in the final—was Marlon Samuels, whose brilliant innings played a crucial role in West Indies’ triumph.
5. 2014 T20 World Cup – Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were one of the most consistent teams in the early years of the ICC T20 World Cup. In the first five editions of the tournament, they reached the final three times. Unfortunately, they ended up on the losing side in their first two attempts, but they finally broke the curse in their third final.
Their historic triumph came in the 2014 T20 World Cup, which was held in Bangladesh. Under the leadership of Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka put together an excellent campaign. The team looked strong throughout the tournament and lost only one match in the group stage, which came against England.
In the final, Sri Lanka faced an Indian side led by MS Dhoni. The Lankans delivered a composed performance and secured a comfortable victory to lift their maiden T20 World Cup trophy. Several players played crucial roles in the triumph, with Ajantha Mendis impressing with the ball, while Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga provided leadership and key performances when it mattered most.
6. 2016 T20 World Cup – West Indies

West Indies couldn’t defend their title in 2014, as they were knocked out in the semi-final. However, under the leadership of Darren Sammy, they made a strong comeback in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, which was held in India.
West Indies played impressive cricket throughout the tournament and eventually faced England in the final. England looked set to win, needing to defend 21 runs in the last over. But Carlos Brathwaite had other plans. Facing Ben Stokes, he smashed four consecutive sixes in the final over, sealing a dramatic victory for West Indies.
With that unforgettable finish, West Indies lifted their second T20 World Cup trophy, becoming the first team in history to win the tournament twice.
7. 2021 T20 World Cup – Australia
The next edition took place in 2021 after a five-year gap and was held in the UAE. Australia, led by Aaron Finch, won their first-ever T20 World Cup title.
One of the most memorable moments came in the semi-final against Pakistan. In a thrilling finish, Matthew Wade smashed three consecutive sixes off Shaheen Afridi to seal a dramatic victory for Australia.
In the final, Australia faced New Zealand and delivered a strong performance to secure the trophy. David Warner and Adam Zampa were among Australia’s standout performers throughout the tournament, playing key roles in their historic win.
8. 2022 T20 World Cup – England

The 2022 edition featured 16 teams and was hosted in Australia. England had a rocky start, losing a rain-affected opening match against Ireland. However, they quickly recovered and went on an impressive run, winning all their remaining games.
In the semi-final, they crushed India with a dominant 10-wicket victory, before defeating Pakistan in the final to lift the trophy. Key contributors for England included Jos Buttler, Alex Hales, Ben Stokes, and Sam Curran, who all played pivotal roles in the team’s success. England became only the second team, after the West Indies, to win the T20 World Cup twice.
9. 2024 T20 World Cup – India

India, the winners of the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup, ended a 17-year wait for another ICC trophy by triumphing in the 2024 edition. They lifted the title after a thrilling final against South Africa, winning by just seven runs. Prior to this, India’s last ICC trophy win was in 2013, but they made a spectacular comeback in 2024, going undefeated throughout the tournament.
With this victory, India became only the third team—after the West Indies and England—to win the ICC T20 World Cup twice.
10. 2026 T20 World Cup – India
India made history by winning the 2026 T20 World Cup, achieving several unprecedented milestones. They became the first team to win the T20 World Cup back-to-back, the first team to claim three T20 World Cup titles, and the first to lift the trophy on home soil.
In the final, the Men in Blue dominated New Zealand, defeating them by 96 runs. Batting first, India posted a colossal total of 255 runs, putting immense pressure on the Kiwis, who could manage only 159 runs before being bowled out.
