A captain truly earns a place in history when they lead their team to an ICC title. Legends like MS Dhoni and Ricky Ponting are still remembered for their outstanding leadership and multiple ICC trophies.

In this article, let’s look at the captains who led their teams to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The first edition of the tournament was held in 2007, and by 2024, nine editions have been played. Interestingly, only one captain in history has managed to win the Men’s T20 World Cup twice.

1. 2007 T20 World Cup – MS Dhoni (India)

The 2007 ICC World Twenty20 completely changed the way the game was seen around the world. It introduced a brand-new ICC tournament and, more importantly for India, it brought a young captain into the spotlight — MS Dhoni, who would soon be known as “Captain Cool.”
It’s rare for a new captain to win a major ICC trophy in their very first tournament, but Dhoni did exactly that. Leading a young Indian team in South Africa, he guided them with calmness and confidence, creating a moment that would become historic for Indian cricket.
India played outstanding cricket throughout the tournament. They defeated strong teams like Australia, England, South Africa, and their biggest rivals, Pakistan.
In a thrilling final against Pakistan, India held their nerve and secured victory, becoming the first team ever to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. That triumph not only launched Dhoni’s legendary captaincy era but also played a huge role in making T20 cricket one of the most popular formats in the world.
2. 2009 T20 World Cup – Younis Khan (Pakistan)

The second edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was held in England in 2009, where Pakistan finally completed the unfinished business from two years earlier. After suffering a heartbreaking defeat in the final of the inaugural tournament in 2007, Pakistan returned stronger and lifted the trophy in 2009.
Led by captain Younis Khan, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the final to claim their first T20 World Cup title. With this victory, Younis Khan became only the second Pakistani captain to win a Cricket World Cup, following Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to the 1992 ODI World Cup triumph.
3. 2010 T20 World Cup – Paul Collingwood (England)

England won their first-ever ICC World Cup trophy in 2010 when they lifted the ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies. Under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood, England delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
With several players stepping up at crucial moments, the team played with great confidence and determination. In the final, England defeated their arch-rivals Australia to claim the title, making Collingwood the first English captain to win a World Cup in any format.
4. 2012 T20 World Cup – Daren Sammy (West Indies)

Darren Sammy remains the most successful captain when it comes to winning T20 World Cups. The West Indies have always had explosive players suited for the T20 format, but it was Sammy’s leadership that truly brought out the best in them and guided the team to glory in the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup.
West Indies only managed to reach the Super 8 stage on the basis of net run rate, but once they got there, the team completely turned things around. Playing with confidence and momentum, they kept winning and eventually reached the final.
In the title clash, West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs to lift their first ICC T20 World Cup trophy, marking a historic moment for the team.
5. 2014 T20 World Cup – Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka)

The fifth edition of the T20 World Cup was held in Bangladesh and featured 16 teams, making it the biggest tournament at that time. Sri Lanka, led by Lasith Malinga, had an impressive campaign throughout the competition. They finished at the top of the Super 8 stage and then defeated West Indies in the semi-final.
In the final, Sri Lanka faced India. Kumar Sangakkara played a superb innings under pressure, guiding his team toward victory. Sri Lanka eventually lifted the trophy, marking a memorable moment in their cricket history. With this win, Lasith Malinga became only the second Sri Lankan captain to lead the national team to a World Cup title.
6. 2016 T20 World Cup – Daren Sammy (West Indies)

Daren Sammy had an outstanding impact in T20 World Cups. Overall, he captained the West Indies in 47 T20 internationals, winning 27 of them—a remarkable record. Among those victories were two T20 World Cup final wins, which speaks volumes about his leadership.
In the 2016 T20 World Cup, Sammy led the West Indies to glory, defeating England in a thrilling final. The match is remembered for Carlos Brathwaite’s heroics, smashing four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes in the final over to chase down 21 runs and seal a historic victory.
7. 2021 T20 World Cup – Aaron Finch (Australia)

Apart from being one of Australia’s finest T20I batters, Aaron Finch will also be remembered as the captain who led the team to their first-ever men’s ICC T20 World Cup title. In the 2021 tournament, held in the UAE, Australia was a dominant force throughout, culminating in a thrilling victory over New Zealand in the final to lift the trophy.
8. 2022 T20 World Cup – Jos Buttler (England)

England claimed their second ICC T20 World Cup title in 2022, with opener and wicket-keeper Jos Buttler leading the team to glory. Taking over the captaincy was no easy task for Buttler, as Eoin Morgan had retired just six months earlier. Despite having little time to settle into the role, Buttler handled the pressure with remarkable composure. Even after a surprising loss to Ireland early in the tournament, he guided England back on track.
Though England started the competition somewhat rusty, they peaked when it mattered most. They dominated India in the semi-finals, winning by 10 wickets, and then triumphed over Pakistan in the final. With this victory, Buttler became only the second English captain to lead the team to ICC T20 World Cup success.
9. 2024 T20 World Cup – Rohit Sharma (India)

Rohit Sharma made history in 2024 by leading India to their second ICC T20 World Cup title. Under his captaincy, India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, showcasing a blend of skill, strategy, and composure. In a thrilling final, they edged out South Africa by seven runs, with Rohit becoming only the second Indian captain to lift the T20 World Cup trophy, after MS Dhoni.
His masterful use of bowling changes, calm demeanor, and tactical acumen were evident in every match. After reaching three finals in just 12 months, Rohit finally steered the team to ultimate glory.
10. 2026 T20 World Cup – Suryakumar Yadav (India)

India claimed their third T20 World Cup title under the dynamic leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. The Mumbai batter took over the captaincy after Rohit Sharma retired from the format following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
Yadav led the team with flair and consistency throughout the 2026 edition, with India losing just a single match on their way to the final. In the title clash, India showcased their full strength, posting a massive 255 runs and then bowling out New Zealand for 159, sealing a convincing 96-run victory.
With this win, Suryakumar Yadav became the first captain to lift the T20 World Cup on home soil. Remarkably, India also became the first team to successfully defend their T20 World Cup title.
