Jannik Sinner leads Italy to consecutive Davis Cup victories
Jannik Sinner completed his incredible year and helped Italy win the trophy again by defeating Tallon Griekspoor to guarantee Italy defeat the Netherlands 2-0 in the Davis Cup final on Sunday.
World number one Sinner overcame Griekspoor 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 after Matteo Berrettini had registered a 6-4 6-2 win over Botic van de Zandschulp in the opener.
Griekspoor fought hard in the first set, and Sinner saved the only two break points, but the Italian showed off in the tie-break to gain a small lead.
Sinner immediately responded with two more breaks after Griekspoor gave up an early break in the second set. The Dutchman double-faulted for the first break and wildly miscued with a backhand for the second.
Sinner was trouble-free after that, capping a fantastic season with a victorious conclusion.
The Italian has only lost one set during that run, with a 73-6 singles record at the end of a year that saw him win the Australian Open, US Open, and ATP Finals.
Sensational Sinner leads the way
Sinner has had an absolutely incredible year, becoming the first man since Roger Federer in the Open Era to win at least one set in every match during a season.
His victory ensured Italy became the first team to retain the Davis Cup since the Czech Republic triumphed in 2012 and 2013.
They also won the Billie Jean King Cup earlier this week. Italy is only the third country in the past 30 years to win both trophies in the same season, following the Czech Republic in 2012 and Russia in 2021.
