The Double Edged Greenwood that Getafe Wielded
Getafe are a club which has for the most part remained in the shadows of their more illustrious counterparts in Real and Atletico but are a top division club in their own right who are are force to be reckoned with. Their performances this season has seen them end up in an unremarkable 13th which at the end. Any other season would evoke a response of meh by the general follower but the recently concluded season just a little bit different.
No, Kylian Mbappe has not ended up at the wrong address at Madrid but this player in question has added much needed edge to the team in question here. The cost of the edge has been off the field and it seemed like it would hurt them like a thorn. For the most part it has but from the perspective of the club, it was a no brainer from a sporting perspective which seemed to have paid off. They were tipped for the drop at the start of the said season and are no way near the global behemoth that their neighbours are and are a local club.
Thus even though this would potentially be classified a PR disaster by many. Morally and ethically it would not be sitting right with most fans across the world and even though legally he is not under any scrutiny. Getafe was playing with a double edged wood which could have easily bled their campaign to death by causing dressing room unrest, mass outrage and a host of other issues. But on the contrary, the Getafe fans seemed to have embraced the said player and shirt sales are higher than ever.
From a sporting perspective, he has been far their best player even though 8 strikes in 30 something outings is nothing to be scoffed at. On the surface would not seem like the output worth the hassle of associating with a polarizing situation, the general improvement of on the field standards was justifiable in the eye of those who run the shots at this Madrid based club to validate their temporary acquisition.
As far as the unintended effects are concerned, Getafe is certainly a more recognized club than they were before this transfer but maybe not for the reasons that they would have ideally hoped for. There are certain cons that are associated with signing a pro who splits opinions as much as he does.
In the end, it seems like Getafe were willing wield the Greenwood which might have resulted in off the field stabbing to their image, potential future collaborations and overall not ending up in the best of spots. It has also borne fruit in on the field stabilizing but with his departure, it remains to be seen how this decision pans out in the long run.
