Alex de Minaur becomes first Australian in two decades to qualify for ATP Finals

Alex de Minaur will be appearing in the ATP Finals for the first time this season. He was eighth in the race to Turin with 3745 points, moving up a spot when Novak Djokovic pulled out of the tournament. Throughout the grand slams and tour events this season, Minaur has consistently performed impressively.

Since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004, the 25-year-old is the first Australian to participate in the season-ending championship. In 2000 and 2001, the former world No. 1 had secured the ATP finals. After much anticipation, Australian fans will finally be able to watch their best player compete in the event. Minaur joined Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud in securing Turin's final three spots.

With 63 games played so far this season, the world No. 8 has 47 victories. He is one win away from reaching a new personal record of wins in a season. In the ATP finals, Minaur hopes to surpass his previous record of 47 victories from the 2022 season. Since he was not selected for the Davis Cup finals squad, it will be his last event of the season.

Minaur will play his 400th match on the ATP Tour in Turin, Italy, after having participated in 399 matches in his career. With a victory, he would become the 20th Australian to record 250 victories on the tour. Minaur has been representing Australia's aspirations in the courts for more than seven years now. This season he has achieved various benchmarks for the nation in the sport.

He might achieve even greater heights in 2025 than he did this season. Minaur had never advanced past the quarterfinals of a grand slam until the 2024 season, but this year he made it to the final eight in three of the four majors. The Australian Open remains the only grand slam where he is yet to enter the quarter-finals but has three consecutive fourth round exits since 2022.

Minaur will be hoping to record significant victories on Turin's hardcourts; the crowd will be impressed by his court coverage. Three Australian players have qualified for the event's doubles, so there will be plenty for Australian fans to cheer for. The Aussie pair of Max Purcell/ Jordan Thompson will be in action while fellow countrymen Matthew Ebden will be playing alongside India’s Rohan Bopanna.
