Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Pablo Cuevas: Hamburg Open Preview and Prediction

The second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Pablo Cuevas in the pre-quarterfinals of the Hamburg Open.

Tsitsipas began his campaign thrashing Daniel Evans 6-3 6-1 in under an hour. The Greek did not put a foot wrong from start to finish completely outplaying the Brit.

Coming through the grind of qualifying, Cuevas defeated homeboy, Kevin Krawietz, and former Hamburg champion, Gilles Simon each in straight sets each. After entering the main draw, the veteran dispatched Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-2.

Head to Head record

Tsitsipas leads the head to head record 2-0 against Cuevas. The Greek showed promising signs of revival to form with his depth and precision in the first match against Evans. His backhand was also in good touch.

Cuevas possesses massive experience on the clay surface having won six ATP titles and a grand slam title. The Uruguayan has an effective kick serve along with a topspin heavy forehand. Tsitsipas will try to use his forehand to dominate the rallies and maintain his backhand in a solid position.

“It’s very satisfying to be playing that level of tennis, as I’ve missed playing on clay, it helps my confidence, I’ve watched this tournament on TV since I was very young and I’m delighted to have gotten off to a strong start," said Tsitsipas after his convincing victory against Evans.

It will be a brutal battle between two strong single-handed backhands. Tsitsipas will depend on his all-court game and superior shot selection to outwit Cuevas. Having won all his matches in straight sets so far, Cuevas would be beaming with confidence.

The Uruguayan would pose a tougher test to Tsitsipas than Evans. He would bank on his second serve to grab the crucial points. With the French Open just a few days away, Tsitsipas would look to iron out faults in his game to land in Paris in perfect nick.
