Top 10 players with most Premier League hat-tricks

Scoring three goals in a single Premier League match is no easy task. In fact, some players go their entire careers without scoring even once. But for a select few, notching a hat-trick has looked almost effortless — as simple as putting together a two-piece puzzle.

Hat-tricks are rare in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Since the competition began in 1992, only a small fraction of the thousands of players who have featured — around 4% — have managed to score three goals in a single game.

Here are the top 10 players with most Premier League hat-tricks.

10. Andy Cole - 5

In 1995, Manchester United signed Andy Cole from Newcastle United—and he didn’t take long to make his mark. In less than two seasons, Cole had already announced himself in style with two hat-tricks.

The Premier League Hall of Fame forward went on to add three more to his collection. One of the most memorable came during United’s historic 9–0 demolition of Ipswich Town, when he scored five goals in a single match. He also netted a hat-trick against Barnsley F.C. in 1997.

Fittingly, his final Premier League hat-trick came in 1999—and it was a four-goal masterclass against his former club, Newcastle United.

9. Luis Suárez - 6

In the summer of 2014, Luis Suarez left Liverpool F.C. to join FC Barcelona — and it’s fair to say many Premier League defenders were relieved to see him go.

Suárez had a habit of tormenting English clubs, especially Norwich. Three of his six Liverpool hat-tricks came against Norwich City F.C. alone. The others? Wigan Athletic F.C., West Bromwich Albion F.C., and Cardiff City F.C. also found themselves on the receiving end.

For plenty of Premier League sides, his move to Spain probably felt like a welcome relief.

8. Wayne Rooney - 7

Although Wayne Rooney announced himself on the European stage with a stunning hat-trick on his UEFA Champions League debut against Fenerbahçe S.K. in 2004, he had to wait another two years before netting his first hat-trick in the Premier League.

During his time at Manchester United F.C., Rooney went on to score six league hat-tricks. But fans then had to be patient again — it wasn’t until 2017 that he finally grabbed his seventh Premier League hat-trick, bringing up the milestone more than a decade after his first.

7. Erling Haaland - 8 (still playing)

If it weren’t for the Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland, Manchester City’s treble-winning season might have looked very different. Game after game, he found the net with remarkable ease.

By just his eighth Premier League appearance, Haaland had already notched up his third hat-trick — equalling the total Cristiano Ronaldo managed across eight seasons in the competition. An extraordinary start that set the tone for a historic campaign.

His latest one could end up being Harry Kane’s final Premier League hat-trick, now that he’s playing in the Bundesliga. And with every other player on the list still active and capable of adding to their totals, there’s a real chance the England striker could slip down the rankings over time.

5. Michael Owen - 8

For many younger fans, Michael Owen is better known as a television pundit — often criticised for his blunt or overly obvious commentary.

But that version of Owen is a world away from the player he once was. In his prime, he was one of the most feared strikers in Europe: lightning quick, razor-sharp in front of goal, and capable of turning a game in seconds. The former England international was a relentless goal scorer who terrorised defences and, at his peak, was recognised as the best player in the world when he won the Ballon d'Or.

It’s no surprise that Thierry Henry has a statue outside the Emirates Stadium. On his day, ‘Titi’ was simply unstoppable — quick, skilful, and deadly in front of goal. After joining Arsenal F.C. in 1999, he became the heartbeat of Arsène Wenger’s side and arguably the most important player in the team until he moved on.

3. Robbie Fowler - 9

In the mid-1990s, Robbie Fowler was one of the most feared strikers in the Premier League. He won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in both 1995 and 1996, tearing through defences and scoring goals for fun. For a while, it genuinely felt like he was playing in his own backyard.

During his eight years with Liverpool F.C., Fowler’s hat-tricks didn’t come all at once — they were spread out across different seasons and against a variety of league opponents. But by the time he left Anfield, the Merseyside hero had collected eight match balls, a testament to his deadly finishing and natural eye for goal.

2. Alan Shearer - 11

Once you get to this stage of the list — where players have hit five hat-tricks in a single season almost for fun — you know you’re dealing with something special. Now we’re into double figures.

That’s exactly why Alan Shearer is held in such high regard. During the 1995–96 season, he was simply unstoppable, racking up hat-tricks with remarkable consistency.

Interestingly, although Shearer continued playing in the Premier League until 2006, all 11 of his hat-tricks came in the 1990s — a testament to just how dominant he was during that decade.

Without Sergio Agüero, Manchester City wouldn’t have achieved nearly as much success over the past decade. He is the club’s most prolific striker, scoring more goals than anyone else and recording an incredible 12 hat-tricks against different teams.
