Top 10 teams with most wins in T20I cricket

T20I cricket is a totally different format in comparison to Tests and ODIs. Since it was made official in 2005, it has become the most popular format among fans. It was played once in a while at first, but now it is a regular occurrence. Teams prefer to play Twenty20 Internationals more because the World Cup is played once every two years.

There are 103 teams that participate in this format worldwide. But which team has won the most games to be at the top? In T20I cricket, there are just six teams that have won over 100 games.

In this article, let’s look at the top ten teams with the most wins in T20I cricket.

10. Ireland - 72 wins

Ireland have won more matches than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. It is because they are more active in the shortest format, in contrast to the other two. In August 2008, Ireland took on Scotland in their inaugural Twenty20 International. Since then, they have played 171 games and won 72 matches. The Irish team have also lost 90 matches, with two ending in a tie and seven with no result.

9. Afghanistan - 84 wins

Afghanistan are the only team who started playing this format since 2010, but they are still in the top 10. They took on Ireland in their first T20l match in February 2010, and they have since been a competitive squad that competes in the T20 World Cup as well. Out of 138 games, Afghanistan have won 84 of them. They have also lost 51 games, tied two games and one game ended without any result. Afghanistan have a W/L ratio of 1.647, which is the second-best among the top ten.

Sri Lanka also have a pretty decent record in T20I format. They made their debut in this format against England in June 2006 and were a pretty good team in their early years. They also won the 2014 T20 World Cup, beating India in the final. In the T20I format, they also won the Asia Cup 2022.  Sri Lanka have played 195 games thus far and won 86 of them. They lost 102 games, four ended in a draw, and two concluded without a result.

7. West Indies - 91 wins

Only three teams in history have won the T20 World Cup twice, and the West Indies are one of them. The Caribbean team played their first T20I match in February 2006 against New Zealand and have been playing since then. In both 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup victories, they were led by Daren Sammy. West Indies have so far played 205 matches, including 91 wins and 101 defeats. Ten of their matches concluded without a conclusion, and three of their matches resulted in ties.

England was the nation who introduced the game of cricket to the world. But their first-ever official T20I game was in June 2005 against Australia. England is a fairly strong team that has won the T20 World Cup twice, in 2010 and 2022. They have won 101 of the 194 games they have played so far.

South Africa have been a pretty impressive team in the shortest format of the game. Despite not having any championships, the Proteas have a far better record than some world champions. South Africa played their debut T20I match in October 2005 against New Zealand. Until now, they have played 190 matches and won 105, with 81 defeats. One game ended in a tie and three without any result. Their best performance in any ICC T20 World Cup came in 2024, where they finished the tournament as the runners-up.

Australia were the team that played the first ever official T20I match in 2005. However, in the shortest form of cricket, Australia lacked the stats they would have liked in comparison to the other two formats. In 2021, they won their first-ever T20 World Cup victory in the UAE. So far, Australia have played 200 matches, winning 109 and losing 84 of them. Three of their matches ended in a tie and four concluded without a result.

New Zealand, along with Australia, were the teams who played the inaugural official T20I game in 2005. It's unfortunate for the Black Caps that they haven't taken home any ICC titles in this format. However, their track record as a whole is quite strong. They became the third team to win over 100 T20Is and play more than 200 matches. The Kiwis have played 220 games, winning 111 and losing 92; ten of their matches have ended in ties and seven with no result.

Pakistan have been one of the best teams in the shortest format. They were actually the first team in T20I cricket history to win more than 100 games. The Men in Green won the 2009 T20 World Cup and finished second in the 2007 and 2022 editions. They have participated in 245 games, winning 142, losing 92 with four tied and seven no results overall.

When Team India won the first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007, they created history and demonstrated their superiority over other teams playing in this format. India will try to increase their advantage over the other teams as they have won the majority of their shortest format games. The two-time T20 World Champions have played 237 matches and won 156 games with an exceptional W/L ratio of 2.246, which is the highest for a test-playing nation. They have also lost 69 games; six matches ended in ties and six without any result.
