Top five German players with most appearances in Champions League history
Football has been dominated by German players in numerous tournaments. Over the years, we have seen many players demonstrate their abilities and assist their clubs in winning numerous tournaments. The UEFA Champions League, which pits elite teams from various European leagues against one another, is one of the most prestigious events in European football.
We have seen how well the Germans perform for their respective clubs and dominate this game. Having said that, let’s examine the top five German players who have made the most appearances throughout the competition.
5. Oliver Kahn (103 appearances)
One of the best goalkeepers of the modern era, Kahn spent 14 years as a mainstay for Bayern Munich, where he became their legendary goalkeeper. He is an icon for the German club and won plenty of trophies.
His reliability saw him play matches consistently. He even guided Bayern to the Champions League in 2000–01. After spending so many years with the Bundesliga team, Kahn made the decision to retire from football and left his mark on the team's history book.
4. Philipp Lahm (112 appearances)
One of Bayern's best captains was Philipp Lahm, a versatile center-back who soon established himself as a key member of the team and contributed to its success. Lahm made his debut in Bayern's academy in 2002, and the rest is history.
He played there for 15 years and enjoyed many glorious times. Additionally, he is among the German players with the most Champions League appearances. As captain of Bayern, the fullback led them to victory in the 2012–13 UCL trophy.
3. Manuel Neuer (144 appearances)
Eclipsing Kahn’s legacy as Bayern Munich goalkeeper was nearly impossible. However, because of his steady play, Neuer became the club's all-time best goalkeeper. The fact that no custodian has been able to replace Neuer since he joined the Bundesliga team in 2011 highlights how important he has been to the German team.
Neuer has had a huge impact in goal, whether in the Bundesliga or the Champions League. Having won the trophy in 2012–13 and 2019–20, he is also ranked third among German players with the most appearances in Champions League history.
2. Toni Kroos (151 appearances)
German player Toni Kroos holds the record for most Champions League trophies. After losing the final in 2010-11 against Chelsea, the midfield maestro lifted the first trophy the following season when they (Bayern) beat rival Borussia Dortmund in the final.
After that, he moved to Real Madrid, where he became the club's most important member and helped them win five Champions League titles. The midfield player announced his retirement last season, and he ended the season by winning the trophy after making 151 appearances in the competition.
1. Thomas Muller (154 appearances)
Thomas Muller has the most appearances for a German player in Champions League history. Since Kroos is no longer playing football, Muller can currently only be caught by his teammate Neuer.
Muller has won two Champions League titles while playing for Bayern Munich for the majority of his career. He will now be wearing the Bayern uniform in the UCL for the 155th time if he plays in the upcoming match against the French powerhouse PSG.
