In 2024, One Day International (ODI) cricket became less prominent as teams focused on the shorter format during the initial half of the year in preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The latter half of the year was characterized by a strong emphasis on Test cricket.

Several blockbuster test series including India vs New Zealand, New Zealand vs England, South Africa vs West Indies, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 dominated the second half of 2024. Despite limited opportunities, a few batters made a significant mark in ODI cricket.

5. Harsh Thaker (CAN) – 553 runs

Canada all-rounder Harsh Thaker concluded the year 2024 with a total of 553 runs from 15 innings in One Day International cricket. His remarkable performance has resulted in an average of 46.08 and a strike rate of 71.77.

Thaker demonstrated his exceptional talent in 2024 by achieving two centuries and two half-centuries. His top score, an unbeaten 111 runs off 113 deliveries, was recorded in a match against the UAE in Dubai.

4. Keacy Carty (WI) – 560 runs

In 2024, Keacy Carty of the West Indies scored a total of 560 runs across 12 ODIs. His performance has been a significant boost for the West Indies, enhancing the stability of their middle order. Carty has served as a crucial component in the team's dynamic batting lineup. He achieved an impressive average of 62.22, which featured one century and three half-centuries.

In November 2024, during the third ODI against England held in Bridgetown, he delivered an outstanding batting display, remaining not out with a score of 128, which propelled the West Indies to a convincing eight-wicket victory.

2. Pathum Nissanka (SL) – 694 runs

Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka recorded an impressive total of 694 runs in ODI cricket during the year 2024, boasting an exceptional strike rate of 106.44. His highest individual score in ODIs this year came against Afghanistan, when he hammered a historic double hundred (210*) to script a 42-run win for Sri Lanka.

Nissanka's assertive approach during the powerplay has been instrumental for Sri Lanka in establishing early dominance over their opponents. He concluded an impressive 2024 season with a total of three centuries and two half-centuries. 

1. Kusal Mendis (SL) – 742 runs

Kusal Mendis ended the year 2024 as the leading run-scorer in One Day International (ODI) cricket, amassing a total of 742 runs. Over the past two years, Mendis has established himself as a pivotal player for Sri Lanka in the ODI format. His remarkable achievement was accomplished in 17 matches, where he maintained an average of 53, which included one century and six half-centuries.

Mendis’ highest individual score in 2024 was 143, which came against New Zealand in Dambulla. This remarkable performance contributed to his team's victory by 45 runs, earning him the title of Player of the Match.
