Top Five ISL Seasons with Most Assists by Indian Players

The Indians are getting better season after season at assisting and that is making the league quality spicier.

This years Indian Super League has been another step in creating a quality league where the best of Indian and foreign talent thrives and it has been a huge success to say the least. And that is not a hyperbolic statement but backed by cold hard facts. The cherry on top here is the increasing output and involvement of Indian players and the steady growth and improvement in the general play of  the domestic players.

Along with that, the local lads are also cooking up goals with 134 goals being scored cumulatively across all clubs, the most in any season in the brief history of the competition. The vision with which the league was launched about a decade ago is coming to fruition and its is only going to get better from here on. 

Now coming back to the topic of assists in a singular ISL season, here we have a look at the five most productive campaigns where their homegrown talent provided the most assists.

81 assists – 2019-20

The Indian contingent dished out 81 assists during the 2019-20 campaign of the Indian Super League. Brandon Fernandes was the highest domestic assist-maker in that season with six assists in 17 appearances. He finished third overall in terms of the most assists provided in the ISL that season.

82 assists – 2020-21

The 2020-21 Indian Super League saw the domestic players notch up 82 assists, edging past the record set in the previous campaign. Jerry Mawihmingthanga of Odisha FC finished as the highest Indian assists provider with five in 17 outings. Alexander Romario Jesuraj and Bipin Singh also made a name for themselves in the stats department delivering four assists for their respective clubs.

108 assists – 2021-22

For a  pleasant change, a century was being celebrated amongst the footballing circles rather than cricketing ones as in the 2021-22 season of the Indian Super League their homegrown players smashed past the 100-assist ceiling to record 108 assists in the term. Naorem Roshan Singh of Bengaluru FC finished as the Indian with the most assists. He made seven assists in 17 appearances for the Blues, two more than Liston Colaco. 

116 assists – 2022-23

The 2022-23 season of the Indian Super League witnessed their in house players deliver a slight improvement upon last season and  provided 116 assists. Naorem Mahesh Singh of East Bengal recorded seven, Halicharan Narzary of Hyderabad FC and Lallianzuala Chhangte of Mumbai City FC recorded six assists each respectively, in a very productive season for those lads.

130 assists – 2023-24

The trend of breaking records continued as they once again surpassed the expectations of even the most optimistic set of supporters out their and comprehensively smashed it as the record for most assists provided by Indian players was broken yet again after the conclusion of the 2023-24 season of the Indian Super League. To be precise, 130 assists were provided by domestic footballers, setting a new benchmark. Manvir Singh with seven assists was the highest Indian assist provider.
