Wimbledon 2022 Round 4 Predictions: Quarter-Final places up for grabs

A place in the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon Championships is up for grabs as the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal compete in the 4th round for a place in the quarterfinal. 

With upsets in the women’s section of the draw and a surprise exit of Women’s No.1 seed Iga Swiatek, it is an open contest in the Women’s section. With all the ups and downs in ascendancy here is a look at some of the crunch fourth round matches.

1. Rafael Nadal vs Botic van de Zandschulp

Bidding for his third Wimbledon title, Nadal has so far dropped only two sets in the course of the tournament and will try to continue his impressive run when he faces Botic van de Zandschulp. 

In the only meeting between the two, it was Nadal who won in straight sets at the French Open. Botic van de Zandschulp has so far had a dream run at the Championships and will look to extend it, but will face a stern test in the form of 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.

2. Novak Djokovic vs Tim van Rijthoven

It took just 1 hour and 53 minutes for Novak Djokovic to book his place in the fourth round of Wimbledon as he breezed past fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic. The defending champion takes on Dutch wildcard star, Tim van Rijthoven, in a first-ever meeting between the pair. 

After dropping just seven games in the third round, Djokovic will have all the momentum. Van Rijthoven on the flip side has had a stellar run so far as he has dropped just one set on his way to the fourth round.

3. Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner

The Spaniard is enjoying the form of his life and won’t be underestimated as he takes on Jannik Sinner. 

After surviving a scare in the first round, it has been an easy walk in the park for Alcaraz and defeated Oscar Otte in straight sets to book a fourth round date with Sinner. 

Having beaten the likes of Stan Wawrinka and John Isner, confidence will be high for Sinner as he targets a place in the quarterfinal.

4. Simona Halep vs Paula Badosa

As a former champion in 2019, Simona Halep is the only player left in the draw to have tasted glory at Wimbledon. The Romanian is yet to drop a set in the tournament but will face a litmus test in the form of Paula Badosa. 

Like Halep, Badosa is also yet to drop a set in the Wimbledon Championships and being a higher seed she will fancy her chances to win the whole thing. She beat former another former champion Petra Kvitova in the third round.

5. Heather Watson vs Jule Niemeier

British hopes will be on high as Heather Watson will play for a place in the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon Championships. This is Watson’s best performance at a Grand Slam and will have the burden of high expectations when she takes on Jule Niemeier. 

The German star has so far been relentless in the Wimbledon Championships and dropped a set in the previous third round. However, it is Watson who has won the only previous meeting between the two.

6. Ons Jabeur vs Elise Mertens 

Ons Jabeur is the highest seed remaining in the Wimbledon Championships on the Women’s side after No.1 seed Iga Swiatek exited the competition on Saturday. The Tunisian looks nailed on to be on her way to the title as she is yet to drop a set. 

However, Jabeur faces Elise Mertens, a player whom she has never defeated. In the only previous meeting at the US Open in 2021, it was the Belgian star that emerged victorious as she now fights for a place in the quarterfinal.
