The US Open 2022 is all set for a blockbuster clash as defending US Open Champion Daniil Medvedev takes on Wimbledon runners-up Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round. 

The pair will lock horns for the fifth time in their career, while this will be the second time these two meet at a Grand Slam. 

Daniil Medvedev beat Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open in January, which remains the only time the Russian has got the better of the Australian.

On four previous occasions the pair has exchanged hands; it is the Australian Kyrgios who has been dominant. He won the first-ever meeting in 2019 on the clay court of Rome. The pair next met in the final in Washington DC where Kyrgios emerged victorious in straight sets winning, 7-66, 7-64.

A four-set win against Kyrgios at the Australian Open was the first time Medvedev got the better of his counterpart, beating him 7-61, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the Round of 64. However, revenge was served in Canada when they met for the fourth time as the 27-year-old Kyrgios ran out winner by 6-72, 6-4, 6-2.

Daniil Medvedev vs Nick Kyrgios: Player Analysis

Medvedev has got a big first serve that could come as a big weapon in his arsenal as he has already delivered 30 aces. 

His ability to read the opposition counterpart has seen him create 45 break points and has swiftly converted 19 of those, which sees his conversion rate at a little over 40 percent. More importantly, he is yet to be stretched in the entire tournament, having not dropped a single set.

27-year-old Kyrgios has amassed a total of 64 aces in the three matches he has played, averaging a little over 21 aces per match, and could once again be the biggest weapon in the fourth round clash. 

On all three occasions, he has beaten Medvedev he has used the serve to get the better of him. The underarm serve is another thing that could see Medvedev worried. Having both the tie breakers in the US Open so far, he could bring his ‘A-Game’ into play.

Daniil Medvedev vs Nick Kyrgios: US Open 2022 Journey so far

The Russian has been relentless so far in the US Open and is flawless in his approach that has seen him drop just 15 games in his first three matches. Medvedev beat Stefan Kozlov in a little over an hour. The 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 win saw him drop just six games in the match. 

While there was a little struggle in the next match, Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech could not stop the defending champion from registering a win. The 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 win was the toughest task he has faced so far in the tournament. Yibing Wu was also an easy task for Medvedev in the third round as he got the better of him 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

Nick Kyrgios

The Wimbledon runner-up, Kyrgios hasn’t had a titanic struggle but has been stretched to his limit. While it was a straight-set win in the opening round against fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, he did the job by winning 6-3, 6-4, 7-64.

Kyrgios dropped a set against Benjamin Bonzi of France but got through in little over two hours as he ran out victorious by 7-63, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. 

The Australian has so far won both his tie-breaks and will be fancying his opportunity against the defending champion. While Jeff Wolf looked like a tough task on the paper, Kyrgios made light work of the home star, as he beat him 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.
