Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were one of the teams that fared well in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction held in Dubai on December 19. They spent INR 30.40 crore in the auction and got match-winning players Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shardul Thakur.

As IPL 2024 edition is about to start, let’s do a SWOT Analysis of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Strengths

CSK have arguably the best-balanced side in the IPL 2024. Anchored by a robust top order featuring batters like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, and Shivam Dube, CSK boasts a batting lineup capable of setting imposing totals. In their fifth title win, their openers Gaikwad and Conway played a vital role with their bats.  In 2024, they will be expected to showcase their batting mettle again for the team.

Moreover, the team flaunts exceptional all-rounders such as Ravindra Jadeja, Mooed Ali, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur, bolstering their versatility and depth. The recent acquisition of Rachin Ravindra has significantly enhanced their overall capabilities. Jadeja has been serving the team efficiently since 2012 while Moeen has been a part of the CSK squad since 2021 and he has also done fabulous work in the team.

In the spin department, CSK continues to shine with match-winning talents like Theekshana and Jadeja, providing crucial breakthroughs and maintaining pressure on opposition batters. Jadeja led CSK’s spin attack splendidly in 2023. He bagged 20 wickets in 16 games at an economy of 7.56 and ended up as the second-leading wicket-taker for the side in the season. They have almost all bases covered in their spin bowling department.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Weaknesses

Chennai Super Kings will be slightly concerned about their backup pacers. They lack an experienced India international fast bowler to spearhead their attack, leaving a void in their bowling arsenal. Deepak Chahar and Matheesha Pathirana are quality bowlers but there is no lethality. Although Tusshar Deshpande performed decently last year, he was inconsistent.

Additionally, the absence of a reliable new ball bowler to support the injury-prone Deepak Chahal poses a significant concern. The team also lacks outright match-winners in the new ball bowling department, capable of turning the tide single-handedly.

Furthermore, concerns arise regarding MS Dhoni’s batting prowess at the age of 42. While his leadership remains unparalleled, Dhoni’s waning consistency with the bat presents a challenge for CSK, especially in high-pressure situations.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Opportunities

IPL 2024 could be CSK talisman Dhoni's last season as a player. It would be amazing if he could lead the team to glory for the sixth time and draw the curtain on an illustrious career. The 42-year-old hasn’t scored big runs in the last four seasons but the team management has shown faith in his exceptional leadership talent.

New Zealand’s young sensation Rachin Ravindra had a great opportunity in IPL 2024 to showcase his all-round skills. He had a great run in the 2023 ODI World Cup with the bat and scored three centuries. If he can perform well in this edition of IPL, he could have a long association with the franchise.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Threats

Dhoni’s leadership helped Super Kings to win the title for the fifth time in 2023 but as a batter, he is struggling to make decent contributions to the team. Dhoni’s struggle with the bat isn’t a good sign for Chennai’s title defence in 2024. The 42-year-old can sometimes hurt the team if he fails to deliver from his bat when needed.

Apart from this, MS Dhoni played the 2023 IPL season with a knee injury and he is still not 100 percent fit. It is not known if the legendary cricketer will play a full season of IPL 2024. If he does not play all matches or he fails to gain peak fitness before the tournament, CSK will be in trouble as they don’t have a reliable captain.
