Simeone backs his defensive approach ahead of reverse fixture at Anfield

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone admitted there will be a few surprises from his team as they hold on a 1-0 advantage in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Liverpool.

A home win three weeks ago gives them something to hang on to and throughout his career as a coach Simeone has produced sides that are masters at defensive resilience.

The Argentine manager, who won two Europa League titles and has been to two Champions League finals during his time in charge said, “I think it is one of our qualities, it is a very solid quality we have.”

“If I tell you my plans for the game it wouldn’t be logical. I think Liverpool know how we will play after eight years of being here. We have to keep what we can during the game. Some managers will say ‘we are going to get forward’.

"But all the thoughts I have before a game it is down to how much you are motivated on the field. Opponents might make you suffer at times in a game, Liverpool have always played almost always with a high line.”

Simeone accepted that Liverpool are a tough opponent with lots of possibilities of ways in which they can hurt his team and he has enough experience that can hopefully not allow his side to repeat the same mistakes.

Being a team always competing at a high level, Simeone expects his team to be in top form, something the fans will be expecting. Alvaro Morata is a doubt for the game, but Simeone feels he will be all set before the game.

Liverpool overturned a 3-0 deficit in last year’s semi-final to beat another La Liga side Barcelona, at Anfield last May and the Rojiblancos boss is completely aware that the atmosphere there can be an advantage.

Simeone said that he is well aware of matches being turned around and some of the great comebacks that the ground has witnessed.
