The Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the new manager for England. 92 days after Gareth Southgate's resignation, the FA announced that Tuchel will replace interim head coach Lee Carsley on January 1, 2025, on an 18-month contract.

Tuchel was born in the small town of Krumbach, Bavaria, in 1973. He started playing football for TSV Krumbach, a local junior grassroots team, where his father, Rudolf, served as his coach.

After showing promise as a defender, Tuchel joined Augsburg's youth academy but was released at the age of 19. He played for Stuttgart Kickers in the German second division before moving to SSV Ulm in the fourth division. At the age of 25, Tuchel was forced to retire in 1998 due to a knee injury, but he had already established the groundwork for his coaching career.

Tuchel began coaching during his final season at Ulm, as well as studying for a business degree and working in a cocktail bar. One of the most significant coaches in German football, Ralf Rangnick, offered Tuchel his first coaching position in 2000 when he hired him to coach the VfB Stuttgart youth team.

Before returning to Augsburg in 2005, Tuchel assisted in the development of future Germany internationals Mario Gomez and Holgar Badstuber. Tuchel took charge of the club's second team in 2007 after gaining his Uefa pro license, and joined Bundesliga side Mainz 05 the following year.

Tuchel was elevated to first-team manager and quickly started to succeed after winning the Bundesliga Under-19 title in his debut season, the first in the club's history. Tuchel resigned and took a year off from football after leading Mainz into the Europa League twice in five seasons.

He returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2015 with the unenviable responsibility of taking Jurgen Klopp's place as head coach. He then went on to join Paris St-Germain in 2018 and Chelsea in 2021.

Tuchel took over as manager of Bayern Munich in 2023 after Julian Nagelsmann left at the end of the previous season with one year left on his contract after the team failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in twelve years.

Tuchel's impressive resume reflects his widespread recognition as one of the world's top tactical coaches. Prior to winning Ligue 1 with PSG in 2018–19 and a domestic treble in 2019–20, he won his first senior trophy in 2016–17 when Dortmund won the DFB Pokal, Germany’s domestic cup competition.

Even though Chelsea lost the Champions League final in 2019–20, Tuchel went one better the following year when Chelsea defeated Manchester City in Porto. Later in 2021, Tuchel won the Uefa Super Cup and the Club World Cup. In 2022–2023, he returned to Germany and led Bayern to the Bundesliga title.

Despite his remarkable football acumen, Tuchel has proven challenging for some to collaborate with. His strained relationship with the club's hierarchy led to his dismissal from Dortmund, PSG, and Chelsea, and it was also one of the reasons he left Bayern.

"Thomas was a passionate player who gave his all on the pitch, but sometimes he had few friends among his team-mates because he was exacting and demanding, which didn’t go down well with some of the players," former Augsburg youth coach Heiner Schumann told BBC Sport.

Heidel said: "He is not an easy person or easy to deal with, but all good coaches are complicated.

"Complicated means they are also tough. They make demands on those around them, their players, from morning to night, and for that reason they are incredible coaches."
