Why is Pedro Porro the best right-back in the Premier League right now?
When Ange Postcoglou was hired, there were doubts about Pedro Porro’s ability to play as an inverted full-back because the Spaniard was hailed as the perfect flying wing-back for Antonio Conte's project.
Porro was lauded as the solution to Tottenham's problems and as the best person to play right wing-back in Conte's lineup. However, supporters weren't sure if the wing-back would fit into Ange Postcoglou's system.
The 25-year-old immediately seemed comfortable in Postecoglou's inverted full-back position. This position has become commonplace in Europe in recent years, but Spurs take a different approach by having both full-backs invert simultaneously. For instance, only one full-back will switch to midfield for Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool.
However, Porro has been outstanding for Spurs under Postecoglou; he has made the north Londoners' right side appear more dangerous in the attack. Porro deserves praise, and perhaps it's time for him to be regarded as one of the Premier League's top right-backs.
Why is Pedro Porro the Premier League's top right-back?
Pedro Porro is considered one of the best right-backs in the world for a variety of reasons, including his passing, vision, and tackling abilities. Porro has adjusted well to playing for Ange Postecoglou and Antonio Conte, among other managers.
Porro is an excellent passer and has set up more goals than some of the Premier League's best attackers. Because of Porro, Tottenham Hotspur supporters have forgotten Kyle Walker, who left to join Manchester City.
Pedro Porro has been a serious offensive threat ever since he joined Tottenham from Sporting CP. He has seven goals and ten assists in 50 Premier League games.
Porro deserves praise for his work rate as well. He contributed significantly to Tottenham's press and, with 5.8 recoveries per 90, finished in the top 18 per cent of the league's full-backs last season. Nevertheless, he has struggled with transitional defense, especially when it comes to opponents' overlaps and underlaps.
His performance has only improved under Ange Postecoglou, who has given him the freedom to attack whenever he wants as an inverted full-back. He currently leads all Premier League right-backs in the number of successful passes into the penalty area per 90 minutes (1.44).
At the end of the 2023–24 league season, he was one of only two defenders, along with Kieran Trippier, to directly contribute to ten or more goals. He became the first Tottenham defender to record seven assists in a single Premier League season.
These figures ought to be sufficient to prove that Porro is currently emerging as one of the league's top right-backs.
