Premier League legend believes Chelsea need three new signings

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard can make the Blues secure a top four place in the Premier League if he makes the right signings in the January transfer window as per former England and Arsenal star Paul Merson.

The former English attacking midfielder believes that Frank Lampard has made an impressive start at Chelsea but needs to sign at least three players in the upcoming winter transfer window to ensure that Chelsea finish this season in top four.

Lampard made a risky choice when he said yes to the Chelsea job in the summer at a daunting time for the club. The Blues had a depleted squad which was further weakened with the departure of the club's talisman for the last few years Eden Hazard as the Belgian moved to Real Madrid.

The West London club were hit by a transfer ban imposed on them by UEFA which meant Lampard could not use the summer transfer window to bolster his squad. It was a huge challenge for the inexperienced manager but he has certainly lived up to the challenge so far.

Chelsea are fourth in the table right now and have been quite impressive. However they faced a slump in form of late.

Lampard has promoted young players to the first team this season and the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori have all become prominent figures in the squad.

The former England and Chelsea midfield superstar deserves all the plaudits for the job he has done so far at Chelsea but Merson believes that Lampard must strengthen in the upcoming winter transfer window to strengthen his squad.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson has made the case for Chelsea signing a striker, a centre-back and a left-back in order to finish in top four.

“They might need a more experienced centre half if Antonio Rudiger isn’t going to be 100 per cent for the rest of the season and they need a left back as well”, said Merson.

Chelsea have been strongly linked with a host of players across Europe after their transfer ban was overturned and it is expected that there will be plenty of activity at Stamford Bridge in January.

Ben Chilwell and Jose Luis Gaya have both been strongly linked for the left-back position. A new centre-back, however, does not look on the cards as the Blues have not been linked too many of them of late.

However, Chelsea certainly look to be in hunt for a new winger as Wilfred Zaha and Jadon Sancho both have been linked with a move to the Bridge.

Timo Werner and Moussa Dembele have also been linked with a switch to Chelsea, which indicates that Chelsea could be looking for a new number nine as well.
