Five phenomenal goalkeepers with five embarrassing moments

It’s a fact that no one can hide that errors on the football pitch. However, it’s the goalkeepers who are punished the most.

Their misfortunes often lead to important goals by the opposition side. The 2019-20 season hasn’t exactly been the most impressive time for the Premier League keepers too.

Players like Alisson and Dean Henderson are having excellent campaigns for their clubs. However, the list mentioned below proves that even the best have to struggle at times and are destined to make few mistakes here and again.

Here is a list of five worst goalkeeping blunders in the Premier League so far this season.

1. Dean Henderson v Liverpool (28/09/19)

Henderson’s mistake came at the beginning of the campaign, with his error leading to Liverpool’s 1-0 victory, which was a struggling one in late September.

The Blades were all set to cause an upset at Bramall Lane. The Reds were without a shot on target for the first 69 minutes of the game.

The English keeper was having a superb game until his blunder, which was a probable lapse of concentration that helped Georginio Wijnaldum’s shot through the keeper’s legs as the ball slipped through Henderson’s grasp.

The 22-year-old has been even more careful after the incident has made up by becoming one of the most highly-regarded stoppers in the Premier League and also a top contender for the Euros 2020.

2. Alisson v Brighton (30/11/19)

Alisson has been almost flawless in his second season in English football. During Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Brighton in November, the Brazilian made an ugly error that could have cost the Reds dearly.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were two goals ahead by the half-hour mark as it appeared to be another normal day for the Reds.

However, a slight mistake by their number one keeper saw Alisson being sent off in the final 15 minutes, which caused the boss to bring second-choice Adrian on in the dying minutes of the game.

The 27-year-old Brazilian was shown a straight red for a blatant handball outside the penalty area with the referee awarding a free-kick to Brighton.

This led to their only goal but resulted in a nervy ten minutes for the hosts.

3. David de Gea v Watford

Well, a lot of people will be surprised to see this name in the list as this is a keeper who isn’t exactly known for making many mistakes.

However, the Spaniard’s fumble against Watford will go down as one of the most humiliating mistakes of the season.

The 29-year-old let Ismaila Sarr’s shot slip through his hands which then went into the back of the net before failing to save a spot-kick by Watford’s captain, Troy Deeney.

That was one of the worst games, not only for David but also for Manchester United, who failed to create any chances and were too sluggish in their approach.

4. Kepa Arrizabalaga v Newcastle United

Kepa is among those keepers, who are really having a tough time in the league. However, Kepa still belongs to Chelsea, who sit on the fourth position, way above the other out of form keepers.

The Chelsea stopper has been regularly criticized for his lack of clean sheets and disappointing save percentage this season.

After barely being tested in the entire game, Arrizabalaga let a late effort by Isaac Hayden slip past him, as the Blues failed to pick up a point at St James’ Park.

5. Vicente Guaita v Sheffield United

Guaita will be hoping to put the match against Blades behind him, with the Crystal Palace keeper gifting the Blades the only goal in the game.

The newly promoted yet impressive side this season, Sheffield United, secured a 1-0 victory away at Selhurst Park.

The Spanish keeper mishandled Oliver Norwood’s corner completely and dropped the ball into his own net just before the hour mark.

This led to one of the most embarrassing moments of the season that helped Chris Wilder’s side get all the three points after the hosts failed to get anything out of the game.
