Premier League 2020-21: Three surprise packages of the season

Many star players have struggled to perform this season while there have been players who have performed much beyond expectations. In this article, we will take a look at three such surprise packages of the season

It has been a rather surprising start to the new Premier League season with almost every club finding it hard to settle down and we can see it if we look at the table.

Manchester United at 15th and their rivals Manchester City at 10th positions respectively pretty much tells the story.

Despite the fact that Premier League holders Liverpool have finally snatched the top position in the table from their arch-rivals Everton this weekend, the Reds have also not been at their absolute best with their shock 2-7 defeat against Aston Villa being a testament of that.

Here's a list of 3 surprise packages of the 2020-21 Premier League season so far:

1) James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Southampton has been pretty impressive this season following their back-to-back defeats in their two opening games.

Since then, they have won four and drawn one and currently find themselves fourth in the table and behind their good run of form, Danny Ings has played a pivotal role.

While the Englishman was excellent last season as well and cannot clearly be termed as a surprise package, Saints' new skipper James Ward-Prowse certainly does qualify for that tag.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been excellent this season in the middle of the park for the South Coast side and has also added up with three goals and one assist to his name. The England international's performance will be a key factor in deciding the fate of the Saints this campaign.

2) Patrick Bamford (Leeds United)

There was plenty of hype regarding newly-promoted Leeds United ahead of the season thanks to many factors. The hype was understandable as the Whites were back in the top tier of English football after a long wait of 16 years and have a manager of Marcelo Bielsa's stature.

It is fair to say that the Whites have lived up to the expectations from them and probably even exceeded it so far but one particular player who has certainly proved everyone wrong is Patrick Bamford.

Almost every football fan and pundit were of the opinion that the Englishman is a decent Championship level striker and he is not good enough for the Premier League.

However, the former Chelsea academy graduate has been immense for Bielsa's side this campaign having scored six times in six games as well as assisting twice. If he can keep up his good work, we might get to see an extraordinary turnaround of his career.

3) Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)

Everton started the season really well but has slipped up in the last two game weeks which has seen them lose their top spot to local rivals Liverpool but one player who has been excellent for them in every game is Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 23-year-old has started the season in quite a fashion and already has eleven goals to his name in all competitions with eight of those coming in the Premier League.

Calvert-Lewin saw an upturn in his career following the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti last season but this season, he has been at a whole another level and if he can continue his stunning form, he could potentially become one of the best strikers in the world in the coming years.
