Premier League Team of the Week (Matchweek 5)

Matchweek 5 of the Premier League witnessed few unexpected results, which made this particular week quite interesting for a football fans. The supporters of the winning teams enjoyed the result, while the supporters of losing side pointed out the mistake of their favorite club.

In the first game of the fifth week, Liverpool thrashed Newcastle United 3-1 and continued their dominating performance in the league. Manchester United, on the other hand, had their key players sidelined from the fixture due to injuries, however, they managed to clinch three surprising points against Leicester City.

The second unanticipated result of the weekend came from the game between Sheffield United and Southampton. The Blades’ defensive line was not at its best, which resulted in a loss for the home side.

Chelsea overcame Wolves at the Molineux with Tammy Abraham grabbing his first Premier League hat-trick. The match also saw a splendid long-range strike from Fikayo Tomori that opened the scoring in the seven-goal thriller.

Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, got back to winning ways as they clinched a 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace at home. This was Spurs’ second win in five Premier League games.

The most shocking result of this weekend came from the last game on Saturday. The reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City went down 3-2 against the newly promoted Norwich City. This game also witnessed Teemu Pukki’s sixth goal of the season. The Finnish striker has now scored a goal against Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City in the current season.

In the Sunday fixtures, Bournemouth registered a thumping 3-1 victory against Everton, while Arsenal gave away 2-0 lead against Watford and had to settle for one point.

Aston Villa and West Ham’s goalless draw rounded up the matchweek. Arthur Masuaku joined Billy Sharp by being the second player to be sent off in this matchweek.

I have kept in mind individual stats and recent performances along with the teams represented and played against. Without further ado, let’s look at the Team of the Week of Premier League Matchweek 5.

Goalkeeper

Goalkeeper - Premier League Team of the Week (Matchweek 5)

The first player to mark his presence in our Premier League Team of the Week is Angus Gunn. The Southampton goalkeeper was the reason behind the Saints’ win. He also bagged his second clean sheet of the current Premier League season.

As most of us were expecting the Blades to easily clinch three points in this game, we were proven wrong by the visitors. The Saints gave out a perfect performance in all sections, especially, the defensive end.

Gunn made a total of four saves out of which two were parried saves. This solid performance from the Englishman helped his side in clinching their second league victory of the season.

Defenders

Defenders - Premier League Team of the Week (Matchweek 5)

Andrew Robertson is the first defender to be a part of the four-man defensive line. It was a usual day at the office for the Scot as he gave an impressive shift on both ends. The left-back assisted the equalizer of his side, which was scored by Sadio Mane. Robertson also made two interceptions and dribbled past the Newcastle’s players on three occasions. This all-round performance of the defender made him part of the Premier League Team of the Week.

Fikayo Tomori is the second defender in this Team of the Week. The youngster gave a solid performance against Wolves that helped Chelsea in winning their second game of this season. The 21-year-old defender opened the scoring with a sensational long-range strike. This was a huge boost for the Blues as they went on to score five goals in the match. The Englishman also made three tackles along with eight interceptions.

Victor Lindelof joins Tomori in the heart of the defense. The United defender played a major role in the injury struck, Red Devils’ victory over Leicester City. The Swede made eight clearances, two interceptions and won two aerial challenges. This tremendous performance of Lindelof helped United in keeping a second clean sheet of this season.

The last man to complete the defensive line of the Team of the Week is Serge Aurier. The Ivorian defender assisted the second goal of Son Heung-Min and Spurs. Also, his deflected shot led to Patrick van Aanholt’s own goal. Apart from helping the forwards in scoring, the right-back delivered on the defensive front by making two tackles and five interceptions.

Midfielders

Midfielders - Premier League Team of the Week (Matchweek 5)

Sadio Mane continued his sensational performance in the Premier League. The winger scored two goals in the first half of the match that helped Liverpool in winning their fifth consecutive match of this season. The Senegalese winger also provided two key passes but none of them ended at the back of the net. Mane is in a tremendous form currently and his side needs him at his best to win the Premier League this season.

The second player to be a part of the Team of the Week is Kenny McLean. The Scott opened the scoring against the mighty, Manchester City. This was McLean’s first Premier League goal and I’m sure he must have enjoyed this one as it came in such an important game. Moreover, the midfielder made three interceptions and seven clearances that helped his side in winning against the Citizens.

Declan Rice faced a lot of criticism over his selection and performance for England national football team. This didn’t distract the midfielder as he continued his brilliant performance in the Premier League against Aston Villa. The match ended in a goalless draw, but Rice made his presence known to everybody. The Englishman took two shots and made six tackles along with two interceptions.

The last but not the least, Son Heung-Min completes our midfield. The South Korean forward has been the key player for Spurs in recent times. The Spurs winger had three shots on target out of which two ended at the back of the net. This mind-blowing performance of the South Korean  helped his side in getting back to the winning ways after failing to win their last two games.

Forwards

Team of the Week
Forwards - Premier League Team of the Week (Matchweek 5)

The first forward that made it to the Team of the Week is Tammy Abraham. The new number nine of Chelsea scored his first Premier League hat-trick against Wolves in an away fixture. Abraham is in astounding form and the Blues are lucky that they found their new striker because of the transfer ban. The Englishman has already netted seven goals and is currently leading goal scorer along with Sergio Aguero in this season.

The last player to complete our Team of the Matchweek 5 is Teemu Pukki. The Finnish forward continued his tremendous performance in the Premier League. Many of us thought that Pukki will struggle to score against Manchester City, but the forward proved us wrong by scoring his sixth goal of this season. The Norwich forward also created Todd Cantwell’s goal that increased the pressure on the Citizens. This complete performance from Pukki helped the Canaries in producing one of the major upsets of this season.
