Atletico Madrid looking to sign Edinson Cavani on a free transfer

Edinson Cavani took everyone by surprise by reaching an agreement to join Atletico Madrid. The Uruguayan striker is expected to pen a three-year contract when he departs from Ligue 1 champions, PSG.

Cavani has registered himself as one of the top PSG strikers by becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and winning innumerable domestic honors. The former Napoli forward also managed to successfully deal with some very egoistical players over the seasons, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and also Neymar during the Brazilian’s early days at the club.

A transfer in the summer window is expected but Paris Saint-Germain will be clearly looking towards the future with their loanee, Mauro Icardi.

Renowned Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio claims Atletico want to sign the striker and bring him to Wanda Metropolitano at the earliest to cover for the injured Diego Costa, who is doubtful to face Liverpool in the Champions League.

However, the report also says that an agreement between PSG and Atletico is still to be reached. Los Colchoneros boss Diego Simeone has had his eyes on the former Napoli forward for years, but he may have to sell a few players so that he can get the 32-year-old into the team.

Thomas Lemar also known as the ‘misfiring winger’ is one of the top targets of Simeone, who is considered to compensate some funds from. A move away from Madrid to PSG’s fierce rivals, Lyon is anticipated. Simeone is planning to cut his losses on a player who is yet to register a goal or an assist this season.

Alvaro Morata has fired seven La Liga goals in 15 appearances. He is the only distinct threat on the pitch for Atletico as the other forwards like Costa, Joao Felix and Angel Correa are stuck with two goals each.

Cavani would come as an obvious threat for others and a massive improvement in Atleti’s attacking power, even if he is approaching the twilight period of his career and has gone through an injury-troubled season till now. Cavani has been on the scoresheet twice, also managing a UCL goal across two substitute appearances.
