On his way to the quarter-final, he defeated Laslo Djere 3-1 in the first round (7-6) (6-4) (3-6) (7-6). In the next round, he played Soonwo Kwon in an intense 5 setter and won 3-2 by (7-6) (6-7) (6-7) (7-5) (6-2). 

It was one of the best matches yet in this edition of the Australian Open. In the third round he played Reilly Opelka and defeated him 3-1 by (7-6) (4-6) (6-3) (6-4). 

In the 4th round, he defeated the Australian Open contender Alexander Zverev in straight 3 sets by (6-3) (7-6) (6-3)
