Bayern Munich has the quality to win the Champions League: Philippe Coutinho

Phillipe Coutinho reckons Bayern Munich has it in them to become the champions of Europe this season.

Bayern has been the strongest and the most dominant team in the German league in the recent past, but they haven’t been able to flex their muscles in Europe.

The last time Bayern became the European champions was in 2012-13. It was the perfect season for die roten where they clinched three trophies. They won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, all together in one season under the guidance of Jupp Heynckes.

According to Coutinho who is currently at Bayern on loan, the treble is possible again for the Bavarians as the current manager Hansi Flick is very much capable of taking the team to the same heights of success Heynckes once took them to.

Talking to the Brazilian newspaper Abendzeitung in Qatar where he was training with Bayern during the winter break, Coutinho said, “Flick has played his part in creating such a good atmosphere. And when you have fun, it’s easier to do your job, in both training and matches.”

Bayern was the best team in the group stage of this season’s Champions League as they collected the maximum 18 points from their six games with a goal differential of +19. They just looked a class apart against some of the teams that they played.

However, the knockouts are going to be different ball-game altogether and Coutinho knows that. The Brazilian doesn’t think there is any team which is the outright favorite at the moment to win the Champions League, but he insists Bayern is good enough to go all the way.

“No favourites in the knockout stage. We will try our best to reach the next round of course go on to win the Champions League. I think we have the quality in our squad to do so.” Coutinho said when asked about his team’s chances in the Champions League knockouts.
