Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner: Match Preview

Novak Djokovic will try to move one step closer to an elusive seventh Wimbledon title as he takes on Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal. 

The pair will face for a place in the semifinal of the Wimbledon with both Djokovic and Sinner enjoying their time on the grass courts of Wimbledon. With experience on his side, Djokovic will be the favourite to advance but Sinner has all the tools in his arsenal to advance to the final four and cause an upset.

This will be just the second meeting between the pair as they buy for a place in the semifinal. 

The only meeting between Djokovic and Sinner came at the Monte Carlo 2021 in the round of 32. The straight-set win on that occasion saw Djokovic run out winner by 6-4, 6-2, however, he was unable to go all the way and win the whole thing.

Djokovic, 35, is targeting his first Grand Slam title for a year after he emerged victorious at the SW19 in 2021. 

Since that triumph, he played and lost in the final of the US Open. The No.1 seed so far has been good enough with his performance and dropped only two sets so far. 

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has almost spent nine hours on the court and is yet to face a tie break. With just 40 percent break points conversion rate the Serbian will have to improve on his performance.

20-year-old Sinner is in the best run of his career as he targets a place in the semifinal. So far he has been stretched and has spent almost three hours more on the court than Djokovic. 

Even Sinner’s break points conversion rate is poor at 34 percent and will have to improve against the six-time champion. The Italian has played two tiebreaks at Wimbledon and won only once.

It was an easy task for Nadal in the previous round as he got past wildcard entrant Tim van Rijthoven in four sets. The Dutchman did trouble Djokovic, but the Serb looked in complete control of the match despite dropping a set and won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Earlier the likes of Miomir Kecmanovic and Thanasi Kokkinakis were hardly any match to the defending champion as he got past them without dropping a set. Soonwoo Kwon also got a set out of Djokovic, but that didn’t have any effect in the first round clash as he made his way to the next round.

It has been a rollercoaster of a ride for Jannik Sinner so far at the Wimbledon Championships. In the first round, he beat three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in four sets and followed that with another four-sets win against Mikael Ymer.

It was expected to be a tough contest for Sinner against America’s John Isner but won comprehensively in three sets with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. The fourth round match against Carlos Alcaraz was supposed to be a banana skin, but then the Italian held his nerves to punch his ticket to the quarterfinal.
