The deadlock was finally broken when Mauricinho capitalised on a defensive mix-up, poking the ball home to give Brazil the lead. Italy responded early in the second period through Tomasso Fazzini, who brought the match level with a well-taken finish.

With both sides pushing for a winner in the third period, Bobo produced a stunning fingertip save to deny Italy goalkeeper Gean Pietro's long-range volley. Moments later, Mauricinho came inches from scoring a wonder goal with an overhead kick that whistled just wide.
