The West African side appeared poised for a podium finish after taking a 2-1 lead into the third period, thanks to goals from Ninou Diatta and Sidy Fall. However, a late surge from Portugal saw Andre Lourenço net the decisive goal with just over two minutes remaining, handing Senegal a narrow 3-2 defeat in the third-place playoff.
